Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-01-11 08:26

Turkish customs officials on Tuesday intercepted four trucks suspected of carrying military equipment from Iran to Syria, a high-ranking Turkish official said.

The trucks were confiscated at the Oncupinar border crossing after police received information about their cargo, Yusuf Odabas, governor of Kilis province, was quoted as saying by the online edition of local newspaper Today's Zaman.

"The four trucks were confiscated by customs. They are alleged to be carrying military equipment," said Odabas, adding that experts were being sent from the Turkish capital of Ankara to examine the cargo.

Turkey, once a close ally of Syria, has imposed a series of sanction measures on Syria, including economic sanctions and an arms embargo, in protest at the Syrian government's alleged crackdown on protesters.
