Some Fatah members to be allowed back to Gaza: Hamas
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-01-21 22:43

Hamas will approve the return of dozens of rival Fatah party's members to the Gaza Strip to push up Palestinian reconciliation, prime minister of the deposed Hamas government Ismail Haneya said Saturday.

The decision will be in response to committees that were formed to pave the way for the implementation of the May agreement that Egypt brokered between Hamas and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah party.

"We accept the return of 70 to 80 Fatah members who stay outside to Gaza," Haneya told reporters after he met with members of the "freedoms committee" at his Gaza office.

Hundreds of Fatah members and security officers fled Gaza and settled in nearby countries or in the West Bank when Hamas routed pro-Abbas forces and took over Gaza in 2007.

Haneya also said that his government would hand over Abbas' house in Gaza to Fatah, allow Central Elections Commission to operate here and allow staff employed by Abbas' West Bank government to work in Gaza to issue passports.

"We call on our brothers in the West Bank to take similar steps on the way to reconciliation," Haneya added.

About 400 Fatah members settled outside the Gaza Strip, which is a complicated issue as Hamas accuses most of them of committing crimes and insists on sending them to trials.
