Iran summons Denmark's ambassador over EU oil embargo
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-01-25 08:45

Iran summoned Denmark's ambassador to Tehran, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the European Union (EU), on Tuesday to voice protest against the 27- nation bloc's oil sanction against Tehran, the semi-official Fars news agency reported.

During the meeting with the ambassador, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Ali-Asqar Khaji voiced Tehran's protest against what he called the "illogical" decision made at the EU ministerial meeting on Monday to impose oil sanctions against Tehran.

"There are forces in the EU that seek to create tension in the relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran by following the U.S. policies and adopting a hostile approach," he said.

Iran will not withdraw from its legal and legitimate rights under such pressures and "cruel" measures, he said, adding that the EU should be blamed for the consequences of the measures.

The EU on Monday imposed further sanctions against Iran's oil exports as well as its central bank, a move aimed at ramping up pressure over the country's disputed nuclear program.

According to an EU conclusion, the 27-member bloc banned imports of Iranian crude oil and petroleum products.

However, to protect the vested interests of European companies, the conclusion gave countries which "already concluded contracts" with Iran a deadline of July 1, 2012 to carry out the embargo.
