Syria rejects any foreign intervention: envoy
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-01 07:38

Syria on Tuesday accused a few countries of "paying lip service to human rights and democracy, " saying that the Syrian people "will not accept any foreign interference in their internal affairs."

The statement came as the Syrian permanent representative to the UN, Bashar al-Jafari, was taking the floor at an open meeting of the UN Security Council on the current situation of his country.

A few countries in the world "pay lip service to human rights and democracy" and they are in "wishful dreams to return to the colonial period," he said.

The Syrian people rejected violence and do whatever they can to "defend the Arab causes," and the sovereignty of Syria, he said.

The Syrian ambassador accused terrorists of destabilizing Syria, which has been plunged in the political crisis since March, he said.

Al-Jafari's statement came as the Arab League asked the UN Security Council to adopt an Arab-European draft resolution, which was tabled by Morocco on Monday and opposed by Russia, a veto- wielding permanent member of the 15-nation council.

"The attempt to seek the support of the Security Council is an effort to bypass the success of its observer mission and its report," Jafari said.

"Syria rejects any decision outside the Arab League," he said, adding this kind of decisions, if made, are "a blatant violation" of the sovereignty of Syria, intervention of the international affairs of Syria, and the Charter of the Arab League.
