Violence in Syria escalates with new victims in Homs
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-04 23:29

The situation in Syria is worsening with emerging reports of another bloody night in central Homs province, which activists say has killed more than 200 people.

Moreover, some opposition activists, quoted by some Arab TV channels, said that in the offensive launched by the Syrian army on Friday night, at least 300 people were killed and hundreds of others were wounded.

However, Syria on Saturday dismissed the report as "media hype. "

Some sources in Homs told Xinhua that they heard sounds of mortar shells reverberating almost all night and that the firing was from both sides.

Homs, Syria's third largest city and home to about 800,000 people, has witnessed severe clashes between troops loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and militia groups, allegedly comprising Syrian army defectors.

The region is considered one of Syria's most volatile areas, as the daily grind of violence stocked fears that the central region has slid into a civil war.

In a phone conversation with the Saudi-based al-Arabia TV on Saturday, an alleged army defector, speaking for his group, threatened to target all military and security centers across Syria in response to what he called "the regime's bloody assaults on civilians."

The Syrian government said more than 2,000 army and security personnel have been killed during the months-long unrest, while the United Nations put the death toll in the country at more than 5,400.

After Friday night's bloodshed, angry mobs stormed many Syrian embassies overseas, including those in Egypt, England and Greece, according to media reports.

In Egypt, more than one hundred Syrians protested outside the Syrian embassy in Cairo and set one office on fire.

Authorities sent firemen to the embassy and put out the fire, said Egypt's official news agency, adding that security troops were deployed around the compound and 13 protesters were arrested.

In London, six people were arrested during an overnight protest outside the Syrian embassy, the Metropolitan Police said on Saturday, adding that about 150 protesters gathered at the embassy at 0200 GMT.

Some other Syrian provinces, such as Hama, Idlib, as well as some suburbs of Damascus share Homs' severe clashes between the government troops and militias.

The head of the so-called Syrian Free Army, a group of alleged defectors, who were given refuge in Turkey, has recently pledged to carry out wide-scale attacks against army bases across Syria.

Syrian forces have over the past couple of days stepped up their crackdown in restive areas of central Syria and the Damascus suburbs in an attempt to settle the situation once and for all.

On the international arena, the UN Security Council is to meet on the Syrian crisis on Saturday morning to vote on a revised Arab- European draft resolution on Syria.

The announcement came on Thursday after the 15 council members agreed to send a draft resolution back to their capitals for suggestions.

Earlier this week, Russia, a veto-wielding member, voiced its strong opposition to the draft resolution.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said the resolution makes very few demands of the armed groups and that Moscow is concerned whether it prejudges the outcome of a national dialogue among the political forces in Syria.
