Two women were killed and 14 people wounded in separate gunfire and bomb attacks in and near Baghdad on Tuesday, the police said.

Gunmen broke into the house of an Iraqi army officer in Abu Ghraib area, some 20 km west of the capital, and shot dead his wife and wounded one of his children, a local police source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The officer himself escaped the attack unharmed as he was not at the house when the attack occurred, the source said.

Also near the capital, four civilians were injured when a roadside bomb ripped through the town of Mahmodiyah, some 30 km south of Baghdad, a local police source said.

In Baghdad, Sajida Hassan al-Dulaimi, the director of Kadhmiyah women's prison, was killed and her driver wounded, when gunmen using pistols fitted with silencers attacked her convoy in al- Jideda district in southeastern Baghdad, an interior ministry source anonymously told Xinhua.

In a separate incident, two roadside bombs went off outside a building of the Sunni Endowment office in Baghdad's northern district of Saba-Abkar, injuring five civilians, the source said.

In addition, a roadside bomb exploded near a liquor store in Baghdad's central district of Bab al-Sharji, wounding two civilians, he said.

Separately, a civilian was wounded in a roadside bomb explosion outside the building of a private company in Zaafaraniya district in southeastern Baghdad, the source said.

Iraqi cities have been plagued by several attacks, including suicide bombings, since the U.S. troops pulled out of the country late last year.
