Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-13 07:47

Chief of the Arab League (AL) observer mission in Syrian Moustafa al-Dabi has resigned, an AL official told Xinhua on Sunday.

Dabi headed dozens of Arab observers in Syrian in December 2011, after the Syrian government signed an AL protocol on the observer mission.

On January 28, AL Secretary General Nabil al-Arabi asked the observers to immediately halt their operation in the violence-torn country.

The Syrian government has blamed the unrest in Syria on plots by terrorists and foreign-backed armed gangs, and said that more than 2,000 army and security personnel were killed during the past months.

The United Nations put the death toll in the Syrian unrest at more than 5,400.
