Hamas committed to Abbas-Mashaal deal on interim gov't
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-12 18:57

Hamas is committed to the deal its leader Khaled Mashaal reached with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah party on forming an interim unity government, although some of its senior members are against it, a senior Hamas official said Sunday.

"The official position of Hamas is what is expressed by the head of the political bureau (Mashaal)," said the official, Salah al-Bardawil, "What Mashaal signs is binding on the movement and on all its leaders."

The Hamas chief reached the agreement with Abbas in Doha, Qatar, last week. The agreement authorized Abbas to form and head an interim government for the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

Al-Bardawil's remarks came after a member of Hamas political bureau, Mahmoud Zahar, said that Mashaal did not consult with the rest of Hamas leaders before signing the deal.

The Doha declaration enables Islamic Hamas movement and Fatah party to implement a reconciliation agreement brokered by Egypt and signed in Cairo last year.

The interim government will prepare for the general and presidential elections to restore a political unity in the Palestinian territories.

The political split between the rival Palestinian factions worsened when Hamas routed pro-Abbas forces and took over Gaza in 2007.
