Red Cross urges daily ceasefire in Syria
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-22 06:28

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Tuesday urged opposing sides engaged in fighting in Syria to implement a daily ceasefire to allow for the prompt delivery of humanitarian assistance.

In a written message to the press, ICRC president Jakob Kellenberger said, "The current situation requires an immediate decision to implement a humanitarian pause in the fighting."

According to Kellenberger, the ICRC has been in touch with the Syrian authorities and members of the opposition to request for a halt in the fighting.

"It should last at least two hours every day, so that ICRC staff and Syrian Arab Red Crescent volunteers have enough time to deliver aid and evacuate the wounded and the sick," Kellenberger said.

Since February 11, humanitarian aid teams have managed to enter the cities of Homs, Bludan, Al Zabadani and Madaya to provide humanitarian assistance for vulnerable people in need.
