Iran ends air defense drills in southern territory
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-25 00:22

Iran ended its four-day air defense exercises in its south territory conducted by the Khatam-ol-Anbiya Air Defense Base, the local satellite Press TV reported on Friday.

On Monday, Iran started the four-day "Sarallah" air defense maneuvers in the southern part of the country, covering a span of about 190,000 square km, which was aimed at drilling its ability to protect sensitive and nuclear facilities of the country.

On the last day of the drills on Thursday, Iran's air defense units shot down a hypothetical enemy's unmanned aerial vehicles ( UAV), said the report.

The air defense units of Iran's Army deployed various systems on Thursday to counter low-altitude aerial threats and " successfully" identified and destroyed the mock UAV and radar- evading aircraft at an altitude of around 10,000 feet, according to the report.

In other operations on the final day of the drills, Iran's air defense units used heavy artillery fire, shoulder-launched weapons and other missile systems for coping with low-altitude threats, said Press TV.

They also tested specific systems to deal with cruise missile attacks.

On Tuesday, the local media reported that the air defense units of Iran's Khatam-ol-Anbiya Air Defense Base "successfully" identified and repelled a massive airstrike by mock enemy fighter jets.

Also on Tuesday, several mock enemy fighters tried to make an incursion into areas under the control of Iranian air defense units, but Iranian forces identified them using advanced radar systems and forced them away, said semi-official Mehr news agency.

Also, the hypothetical enemy carried out an electronic attack on Iran's air defense systems and its jammers radiated interfering signals toward Iranian radar systems, but Iranian air defense units managed to repel the threat using electronic warfare tactics, said the report.

According to the public relations department of the Khatam-ol- Anbiya Air Defense Base, "Sarallah" maneuvers were meant to enhance the country's integrated network of air defense with a focus on modern defensive tactics.

The other purpose of the war games was to increase the country' s preparedness in the face of military threats, particularly possible attacks on densely populated areas, sensitive and vulnerable centers, and nuclear facilities, said the public relations department of the Khatam-ol- Anbiya Air Defense Base.

The exercises were also aimed at increasing the mobility of rapid response forces to engage in asymmetric warfare and improving coordination between air defense units of various forces in order to provide the country with wide air defense coverage, according to Mehr.

During the maneuvers, domestically manufactured advanced missile systems, air defense artillery systems, various radar systems, and air force surveillance aircraft were used and tested.

Air defense units of the Armed Forces and the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) and the lookouts of the National Police and the Basij voluntary forces took part in the exercises under the command of the Khatam-ol-Anbiya Air Defense Base, said Mehr.
