Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-27 07:17

He said the candidate for president should gain the approval of 35 parliamentarians, adding that the Higher Constitutional Court would supervise the presidential elections.

Anbary said the draft constitution doesn't detract from the rights of minorities, adding that the draft constitution was written with "precise criteria" with the consensus of the committee members.

The main new article was article number 88 which provides that the president should be elected for a seven-year term that is renewable for one term only.

It provides that the parliament speaker calls for electing a president before the end of the current president's term but no less than 60 days and no more than 90 days. The candidate's application would not be accepted unless it has the approval of at least 35 members of the parliament, and each parliamentarian has no right to give his support to more than one candidate.

Meanwhile, the Sabe Bahrat Square in Damascus has been jammed with supporters of the government, who waved national flags and posters of President Bashar Assad.

The rally came in a show of support to the new draft constitution in the country and the process of reforms.
