Palestinians to increase seats in next parliament
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-27 08:51

Palestinians have agreed to increase the number of seats in their next parliament to 150, a Palestinian official said Sunday.

There are currently 132 members in the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC), most of whom come from Islamic Hamas movement, which had dominated the council since 2006 elections.

Once elected, the new PLC members would also become members of the Palestinian National Council (PNC), which is the wider parliament that also represents Palestinian refugees in Diaspora, said Salim al-Zanoun, head of the PNC.

The agreement was reached Thursday when Palestinian factions met in Egypt's capital Cairo to discuss reforming and reactivating Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).

President Mahmoud Abbas who heads Fatah party attended the meeting. Militant movements such as Hamas and Islamic Jihad, which are not members of the organization, also participated in the meeting.

In May, 2011, Egypt brokered a comprehensive pact to reconcile Hamas and Fatah. The deal also opens the door for reforming the PLO to enable the Islamic groups that do not recognize Israel to join it.
