Iran ready for threats: defense minister
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-29 07:14

Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi reiterated Tuesday that Iran is prepared for foreign threats.

Vahidi underlined Iran's preparedness to confront any possible aggression and said that the enemies are not aware of Iran's defense capabilities since the country has some top secret abilities for hard days, the semi-official Fars news agency reported.

"The Islamic republic of Iran has many hidden capabilities which are kept for rainy days," Vahidi told Fars on Tuesday, "We have not yet revealed all our capabilities."

Vahidi also warned about the country's crushing response to any aggressive move by the enemies, saying that the United States and its allies will face a new environment if they dare to war with Iran.

On Monday, Vahidi said that Iran would stand up to threats by Israel and the West.

"The Islamic republic of Iran will give a suitable response to any threats at a proper time and this will make the enemy regret (its actions)," Vahidi told reporters Monday.

A quarterly report recently issued by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) showed that the UN nuclear watchdog remains concerned about the possible military dimensions of Iran's nuclear program, saying that Iran has expanded its uranium enrichment activities in recent months.

Iran's uranium enrichment activities have raised concerns in the West that Tehran is seeking to weaponize its nuclear program. However, Iran insists that the program is solely for "peaceful" purposes such as power generation and medical treatment. Israel, an arch-enemy of Iran, has threatened to launch military operations against Iran's nuclear sites.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak on Tuesday headed to Washington for talks with senior US officials regarding the Iranian nuclear program. This visit comes prior to the trips of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Shimon Peres next week.

Netanyahu talked about his visit at the start of the weekly cabinet meeting on Sunday, saying that the talks with the US officials would surround the regional instability.

"While we will discuss all of these issues, there is no doubt that one issue will be at the center of our talks, and that is, of course, the continued strengthening of Iran and its nuclear program," he said.

On the other hand, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Salehi said Tuesday that Iran hopes to continue talks with the IAEA.

Talking at a disarmament conference in Geneva, Switzerland, Salehi said that the recent talks between IAEA and Iran did not reach an agreement since Iran wanted to develop a framework of cooperation.

Yukiya Amano, director of the IAEA, said last week that no agreement was reached with Iran over its nuclear issue during the recent visit of an IAEA expert team to Tehran for a second round of talks with Iranian officials.
