Syria accuses int'l community of supporting opposition
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-03-03 01:17

Syria's Foreign Ministry on Friday said that the resolutions by the Arab League (AL) and the United Nations (UN) formed a "smokescreen" to render illegitimate support to the armed opposition, which runs counter to the UN Charter.

The ministry's statement came in a letter sent to the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the head of the UN Security Council, and was carried by the state-run SANA news agency.

In the letter, the ministry reiterated the Syrian government's account that Syria has been targeted by armed groups since the very beginning of the unrest, and that armed groups have killed civilians across the country with the aim to inflame people's emotions and feelings and to achieve "cheap gains" regionally and internationally.

"The parties that stood behind arming those groups have denied that accusation over the past months," said the ministry, adding that "such support has resulted in the killing and wounding of many army and security personnel as well as sabotaging scores of public and private properties."

"Since when terrorism and brandishing weapons became an integral part of the opposition?" the ministry questioned.

"It's impossible to portray terrorism as self defense," It stressed, warning against "some opportunistic international parties, which claim to be fighting terrorism in the world while supporting such terrorism in Syria with weapons."

The ministry held "countries that support armed groups on its territories" responsible for the bloodshed in Syria.

The statement said that while the Syrian government shouldered its responsibility to protect the country, "some Arab and Western circles unleashed unwarranted campaigns and overtly expressed its political and financial support to the armed groups."

It added "when the Arab observers submitted their report, which acknowledged and admitted the existence of the armed groups in Syria, the AL withdrew and ended their mission."

The ministry charged that the failure to submit an official copy of the observers' report to the UN Security Council so far " is the biggest proof of the AL denial of its resolutions and credibility."

It said Syria wasn't surprised by the Qatari and Saudi calls for the armament of the Syrian opposition during the Friends of Syria Conference held last week in Tunisia, adding that "what some neighboring countries are doing through facilitating the funneling of weapons to the armed groups in Syria as well as hosting those terrorists and training them on their territories, would lead to catastrophic results in the whole region."

It stressed that Syria is moving forward to achieve the national dialogue as the sole way to end the current crisis.

The ministry concluded by expressing hope that member states of the UN would respect the UN Charter which calls for solving all issues peacefully and not to allow or pass a resolution that would permit the encroachment upon other countries' sovereignty and independence.
