Syria welcomes Annan's visit, "date not determined"
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-03-05 23:26

Syria's foreign ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi said Monday his country has welcomed the upcoming visit of Kofi Annan, the UN and the Arab League's (AL) special envoy to Syria, stressing that "we are waiting for his response to set the date of the visit."

Asked to comment on AL Secretary-General Nabil al-Arabi's statement that Annan is due to visit Syria on March 10, Makdissi said "we have nothing to do with the Arab League," adding that we have informed Annan of our approval on his visit but the date "is not determined yet."

In Cairo, Arabi told reporters at the AL's headquarters that " Kofi Annan told me that Syria will receive him on March 10 and that he would arrive in Cairo on March 7."

Last month, the UN and the AL jointly appointed former UN head Kofi Annan as special envoy to handle the year-long deadly Syrian crisis.
