UN-AL joint special envoy for Syria due to visit Turkey
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-03-11 21:18

Kofi Annan, joint special envoy for Syria of the United Nations and Arab League (AL), is set to arrive in Turkey on Monday evening, following his talks with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad Saturday about proposals for stopping violence and starting a political dialogue.

As part of his discussions with Syria's neighbouring countries, Annan will hold talks with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu on Tuesday and then leave the country, Turkish diplomatic sources told Xinhua.

Annan asked Turkish government to visit Syrian refugee camps in Turkey's southern province of Hatay, but has not officially confirmed yet due to his tight schedule, the sources added.

The UN-AL joint special envoy is also likely to meet with Syrian opposition representatives in Turkey.

Annan's visit to Turkey comes after UN humanitarian chief Valerie Amos had talks in Ankara last week after she left Damascus agreeing on a "limited assessment" exercise on a joint preliminary humanitarian access mission to secure relief access to protest centres such as Syria's third-largest city Homs.

In her talks in Ankara, Amos had asked for cooperation on humanitarian access into Syria, while Turkey as a neighbouring country had pledged its support on the issue, a Turkish diplomat told Xinhua.

Turkey, once a close ally of Syria, has been at the forefront of international criticism against the Syrian regime's bloody crackdown on protests which has claimed over 7,500 lives since the start of the uprising in mid-March last year, according to UN figures.
