PNA warns of prisoners uprising against compulsory DNA tests
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-03-21 20:27

The Palestinian National Authority (PNA) on Wednesday warned of an uprising of Palestinian prisoners against compulsory DNA tests conducted by Israel.

Palestinian Minister of prisoners affairs Issa Qaraqe' said several detainees have started hunger strike in protest of the DNA tests that Israel began to implement recently.

He told Xinhua that the prisoners will also start general disobedience by the beginning of April if Israel did not stop the tests and the collection of DNA samples.

Qaraqe' said that the tests were conducted in three prisons where Palestinian security prisoners are held, adding that the tests are planned to cover all jails.

"These examinations are illegal and are being implemented against the prisoners' will... this is a dangerous unprecedented procedure that deals with the inmates as criminals, not war prisoners," Qaraqe' said.

The prisoners were tied and put in solitary cells during the process of sample collection, Qaraqe' added.

Israel holds nearly 5,000 Palestinians, dozens of whom have been jailed for more than 25 years.

Meanwhile, Qaraqe' revealed that 25 prisoners have been on hunger strike for different periods, the longest of which was of Hana Shalabi, who entered her 36th day without eating on Wednesday.

Shalabi, 30, was taken to a hospital Tuesday after her health condition deteriorated, Qaraqe' said, adding that he had sent a letter to the World Health Organization (WHO), asking them to immediately intervene to save Shalabi's life. He also criticized the International Committee of the Red Cross for "not doing enough " in dealing with the circumstances of the prisoners.

Shalabi demands an end to her administrative detention where prisoners can be kept for years without trial.

As an Islamic Jihad member, Shalabi was arrested in February, roughly three months after she was freed with hundreds of others under a prisoner exchange deal between Israel and the Gaza-based Islamic Hamas movement.
