The Islamic Hamas movement said on Saturday that it wants to get fuel for Gaza Strip's only power plant from Egypt, not Israel.
"Hamas is committed to bringing in Egyptian fuel," said Sami Abu Zuhri, a spokesman for Hamas which controls the Gaza Strip.
On Friday, the power plant got 450,000 liters of industrial diesel from Israel, with which, the West-Bank Palestinian National Authority said it will restart the power station in less than a week.
Abu Zuhri accused the PNA of "avoiding its responsibilities in covering the costs of the fuel."
Hamas wants to get the fuel though smuggling tunnels beneath Gaza's border with Egypt, whose prices are cheaper, the spokesman said, adding Israeli diesel is expensive, and, the PNA demands the Hamas government pay for the fuel.
However, a shortage of fuel in North Sinai and Egyptian restrictions made it difficult for smugglers to buy subsidized fuel and sell it to Hamas. |
