Turkish PM to visit Tehran for talks on regional, nuclear issues
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-03-28 09:20

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan will visit Tehran on Wednesday for talks on the regional situation and nuclear issue, the official IRNA news agency reported Tuesday.

Quoting diplomatic sources in the Turkish embassy in Tehran, IRNA said Erdogan would head a high-ranking politico-economic delegation and visit Tehran for talks on bilateral issues, situation in the Middle East and Iran's nuclear program.

Erdogan, now in South Korea for the Seoul Nuclear Security Summit, will leave South Korea for Iran on Tuesday.

He is scheduled to hold talks with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, First Vice President Mohammad-Reza Rahimi and Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani, said the report.

On Monday, media reported that the new round of nuclear talks between Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council plus Germany (G5+1) will be held on April 13. However, the venue has not been decided yet.

Iran and Turkey have expressed their willingness to have the Turkish city of Istanbul host the talks.

After more than one year of deadlock over the talks on Iran's controversial nuclear program, Tehran in mid-February replied to the European Union Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton's letter over the resumption of nuclear talks.

Ashton later responded to Iran's proposal, saying that the G5+1 agreed to restart nuclear talks with Iran.

Nuclear talks between Iran and the G5+1 in Istanbul in January 2011 failed to reach any agreement as Tehran rejected any notion of suspending the nuclear enrichment in exchange for trade and technological benefits, as called for by several UN Security Council resolutions passed since 2006.
