UAE cracks down on modified cars: report
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-04-09 08:24

UAE vehicle owners who gear up their cars with self-made spoilers, wheel caps or tinted windows will be fined and getting their cars impounded for one month, Gulf News reported Sunday.

According to the report, from June 10 on, the police in Abu Dhabi will impose fines on motorists who have modified their cars on their own instead of by a certified garage. The General Command of Abu Dhabi Police said the initiative aims to ensure safety for drivers, car occupants and pedestrians.

The fine scheme will distinguish between different forms of modifications of the car. Motorists having their exhausts will be fined 900 Dirham or 245 U. S. dollars, while drivers with a self- made increased motor performance have to pay 400 Dirham (109 U. S. dollars).

Abu Dhabi police said only certified mechanics at licensed garages are allowed to do modifications, if any, at cars and these modifications must not violate rules set by the police.

The emirate of Sharjah, which belongs, like Abu Dhabi and Dubai, to the seven sheikhdoms Gulf state United Arab Emirates (UAE), has already started in March to confiscate modified noisy cars with a modified engine. The report said Sharjah police has impounded some 100 vehicles so far whose drivers have violated the new rule.

Back in 2009, the emirate of Dubai banned the registration of cars with modified right-hand steering systems.

The measures to take irregularly modified cars from the streets and highways is part of the country's zero-tolerance policy. The UAE has imposed heavy fines in recent years on over-speeding, false parking and rough driving.
