Jordan Islamists reject elections draft law
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-04-10 13:31

Jordan's largest opposition party the Islamic Action Front on Monday voiced rejections of the elections draft law and called for withdrawing it.

In a statement posted on the website of Jordan's Muslim Brotherhood, the Islamic movement said the draft law is disappointing and is below expectations.

Reforming the elections draft law was one of the major demands by pro-reform demonstrators who have been taking to the streets since early 2011 after the unrest hit Tunisia and swept through the Arab world.

The Islamic movement has stressed on several occasions that it wants an election law that enables political parties with majority seats at the Lower House to form the government.

"The current elections draft law is another version of the previous one-man, one-vote election law," it said in the statement.

The Islamic movement said the law will increase tension in the society and will thwart the democratic life in Jordan and will not encourage political participation.

The new elections draft law, currently at the Lower House for deliberations, increased the number of Lower House seats from current 120 seats to 138.
