Israeli researchers develop easy, cheap scoliosis solution
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-04-16 03:27

An Israeli firm, ApiFix, developed a device that corrects severe scoliosis without invasive surgery, significantly reducing the cost of the treatment procedure and the danger for the patient, Israel21c website reported on Sunday.

The company cofounder, Uri Arnin, created the implant which consists of a ratchet titanium rod mechanism that can expand whenever a physician considers it fit, and eliminates the need for 20 screws along the spine. It only needs one small surgery to be implanted in the spine.

Arnin also pointed out that the current surgical procedures ignore the tissues around the spine that need time to become flexible and that will help in the success of the surgery.

"Soft tissues take time to become flexible. If you do it over a period of days or weeks, they relax enough to realign themselves in the correct position," Arnin said.

The company is currently running trial procedures in Romania and Hungary where the approval process is speedier than Israel. If it is found effective in further trial surgeries, ApiFix could obtain certification within half a year, the report said.
