Iraq "hopeful" about outcome of Baghdad nuclear meeting: envoy
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-04-23 21:08

Iraq's ambassador to Iran Mohammad Majid al-Sheikh expressed hope about the outcome of upcoming nuclear talks between Iran and the six major powers -- Britain, China, France, Russia, the United States plus Germany (P5+1) in Baghdad, the satellite Press TV reported on Monday.

A round of nuclear talks between Iran and the P5+1 concluded in Turkey's Istanbul earlier this month, with both sides describing the talks as positive and agreeing to meet again in Baghdad on May 23.

Commenting on the ongoing visit of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to Tehran, the Iraqi ambassador said that Maliki's visit is "important."

"This visit is of special significance because Baghdad is due to host a new round of talks between Iran and the P5+1," al-Sheikh told Press TV.

"In the Baghdad meeting, there will be no talks of threats and members of the P5+1 will take part in the talks with an understanding that Iran has a right to develop nuclear energy," the ambassador was quoted as saying.

Al-Sheikh said Sunday that the Iraqi capital Baghdad is a suitable venue for the upcoming nuclear talks between Iran P5+1.

Maliki's visit to Tehran would leave positive impacts on the expansion of friendly relations between the two countries, he told official IRNA news agency.

The Iraqi prime minister arrived in Tehran on Sunday for a two- day official visit.
