Israeli navy detains two Gaza fishermen
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-04-24 19:04

The Israeli naval forces arrested on Tuesday two fishermen who were fishing in the Gaza Strip territorial water, officials dealing with the fishermen rights said.

Chief of the Gaza Strip Fishermen Association Nizar Ayyash told Xinhua on telephone that a number of Israeli vessels assaulted and seized a fishermen's boat and arrested the two men on board.

Ayyash condemned the move, saying it is unjustified as the two fishermen didn't over-step the area allowed by Israel for fishing. He called for the immediate release of the two.

Israeli vessels patrol the shores of the Gaza Strip and prohibit fishermen in the Gaza Strip from going further than the allowed area for fishing in the sea.

Israel imposed a tight siege on the Gaza Strip's land and sea since Islamic Hamas movement seized control of the enclave violently in 2007.

In the Gaza Strip, there are 3,500 fishermen working in an area which is 40 km long and 5.6 km width. Fishing in the Gaza Strip feeds 40,000 people, including fishermen and fish vendors.
