Iran rejects allegations of plot to assassinate Saudi envoy in Cairo
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-05-01 21:57

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast rejected on Tuesday the allegations that Iran recently had plots to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to Cairo.

Addressing a weekly press briefing, Mehmanparast strongly turned down the allegations, saying that "the claim is not true."

He added that such allegations will ultimately sow discord in the Muslim world and will serve the interests of Israel.

Two Saudi dailies reported Tuesday that the Egyptian security services foiled an Iranian plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to Cairo three months ago.

The reports said that Egyptian security services informed the Saudi authorities of the arrest of three Iranians in this regard.

In October 2011, the U.S. authorities said that two men, Manssor Arbabsayar, a 56-year-old U.S. citizen holding both the Iranian and U.S. passports, and Gholam Shakuri, an Iranian citizen, were charged with sponsoring and promoting terrorist activities abroad, including a plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the United States.

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Salehi strongly rejected the U.S. accusations, saying that the anti-Iran scenario initiated by the United States is "clumsy."
