Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati said Wednesday that the United Nations should show more resolution when making decision, especially on the Palestinian issue, the official National News agency reported.
"The Palestinian conflict, including the right for Palestinian people to establish an independent state, lies before us. We stress that we were looking for more rigorous decisions on the part of the United Nations," Mikati said at the opening of the 27th session of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA).
"We in Lebanon are still facing ongoing Israeli violations of our sovereignty every day," Mikati said.
He meanwhile said that "Epochal changes in the region are evidence of the correlation between social justice and balanced growth."
The theme of the ESCWA's 27th session is "The role of participation and social justice in achieving sustainable and balanced development."
"There can't be sustainable development if the policies (of governments) fail to integrate the livelihood and cultural and humanitarian demands of people," the Lebanese prime minister said.
The ESCWA, comprising 14 Arab countries in Western Asia, is currently working on expanding its membership.
Lebanon supports requests by Tunisia, Morocco and Libya to join the commission, Mikati said, noting that his country sees this step as another proof of the commitment of these countries to Arab and regional interaction. |
