Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-05-13 19:44

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday warned Israel that if any of the Palestinian prisoners who are going on a hunger strike in Israeli jails is hurt, it will be "a national disaster."

Abbas, who chairs a meeting of Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) executive committee at his headquarters in Ramallah, called on the Israeli government to immediately accept the prisoners' demands.

Over 1,500 prisoners in Israeli jails have been going on hunger strike since April 17. They want the Israeli prisons services to stop the policy of isolating prisoners in solitary cells and improve their living conditions.

Abbas told the PLO members during the meeting "These days, we are passing through crucial circumstances, mainly there are prisoners have been going on a hunger strike for 70 days and others for 30 days."

"The prisoners demands are fair for human beings. We are speaking about the circumstances of imprisoning, so far the Israeli authorities didn't meet their demands despite the ongoing talks, but the situation is too serious," said Abbas.

Abbas clarified that the Palestinian National Authority "is acting on ending the crisis inside the Israeli jails as immediate as possible," adding "if any of the prisoners is getting hurt, there will be a disaster that no one can bear."

Palestinian officials had warned that the health conditions of around 40 prisoners are deteriorating due to the hunger strike. Abbas expressed hope that crisis of the prisoners hunger strike ends very soon.

The PLO meeting that Abbas chairs in Ramallah will also discuss on its meeting's agenda that Israeli response to his political letter he addressed to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last month on the fate of the peace process.
