Iran's Intelligence Ministry said in a statement that Iranian intelligence and police forces foiled a plot by the Jundullah "terrorist group" to assassinate President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in 2007, the local Tehran Times daily reported on Sunday.

According to the statement released on Saturday, three suicide attackers affiliated with the Jundullah group tried to assassinate the president during his visit to the city of Iranshahr in the southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchestan in 2007.

The terrorists had planned to draw near the president during his speech to the people in Iranshahr and carry out their suicide operation. However, the plot was uncovered and intelligence and police forces intervened to prevent the terrorist attack, according to the report.

Four policemen, one intelligence agent and four terrorists were killed during the counterterrorist operation, said Tehran Times.

Jundullah, or Peoples Resistant Movement of Iran, is an insurgent Sunni Islamic organization based in Baluchestan of Pakistan that claims to fight for the rights of Sunni Muslims in Iran.

The group has been identified as a terrorist organization by Iran and Pakistan and has been behind numerous acts of terror and kidnapping inside Iran.
