Israel's ex-envoy convicted of leaking details of probe against FM
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-05-22 01:07

An Israeli court on Monday convicted the former Israeli ambassador to Belarus of leaking to Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, then a Knesset parliament member, details of an ongoing criminal investigation against him.

The conviction, part of a plea bargain, found Ze'ev Ben-Aryeh guilty on counts of disclosure, obstruction of justice, and breach of trust.

Ben-Aryeh, who served in Belarus from 2004 to 2009, was suspected of passing the secret information to Lieberman in person, during the latter's visit to Minsk in August, 2008.

The transferred documents included a confidential request for legal assistance by the Israel police to Belarus law authorities. Ben-Aryeh was forced to resign from office in 2010 following a police investigation.

After admitting to passing on the document, the former ambassador is expected to serve a four to six month community service sentence.

The police also decided to question Lieberman regarding the affair, since he was not authorized to receive the confidential information.

Lieberman, who chairs the ultra-nationalist Yisrael Beiteinu party, is currently facing, in another case, charges of fraud, money laundering, breach of trust and witness harassment.

Police officials on Monday told Ynet news that Ben-Aryeh told investigators how he passed the confidential information to Lieberman, thus strengthening the evidence against the foreign minister in order to indict him.

Israel's Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein is expected to soon announce whether he will probe Lieberman in connection to Ben- Aryeh's case, the Jerusalem Post reported on Monday.
