Israeli Vice PM threatens to bolt coalition over military draft row
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-07-03 03:19

Israeli Vice Prime Minister and Kadima party chief Shaul Mofaz on Monday threatened to leave the coalition government over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's decision to dissolves a committee overseeing a new draft bill to include ultra-Orthodox and Arabs in the army.

Mofaz, who joined Netanyahu's coalition in May, said that "If the prime minister chooses not to head in this necessary direction, the national unity government will come to the end of its road."

Currently, the so-called Tal Law enables ultra-Orthodox Jews to dodge the mandatory military service, which is three years for men and two for women.

The decade-old Tal Law, essentially, allowed yeshiva (Jewish religious seminary) students to indefinitely defer their conscription, which has long raised the ire of other sectors of Israeli society, who they feel are forced to bear an unfair burden of military service.

Arab Israeli citizens are not obliged to do the mandatory service.

Netanyahu announced earlier Monday his intentions of dissolving the draft panel after it encountered harsh criticisms and walkouts by various coalition members.

Mofaz suggested that the committee continues its work despite Netanyahu's decision and stressed that Kadima joined the coalition to write a new draft law that would include everyone.

"The committee was established as part of the (unity) agreement between Kadima and Likud, so the unilateral dissolution of the committee by Netanyahu does not bind Kadima, which will continue to stand behind its obligation to the public and will demand that the committee publish its recommendations as planned on Wednesday, " local Ynet news service quoted Mofaz as saying.

Meanwhile, Netanyahu said he believes in a more "gradual solution" that will please all parties involved.

"If push comes to shove, by Aug. 1 the Israeli Defense Forces ( IDF) will recruit in accordance with its needs, with considerations of the different groups in the population in order to prevent a rift within the Israeli people," he pointed out.
