Israeli PM to meet ruling party parliamentarians on mandatory draft
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-07-08 06:01

Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu decided Saturday to meet with the ruling Likud party's parliamentary faction on Sunday morning on the Keshev Committee's recommendations on increasing haredi and Arab enlistment.

The decision came after Netanyahu's dissolving of the committee headed by the Kadima party's parliamentarian Yohanan Plesner, which brought condemnation from Kadima leader Shaul Mofaz, who has threatened to leave the government coalition over the issue.

If the Likud faction agrees to accept the committee's findings, Netanyahu will then meet with Mofaz in order to designate a team to formulate a bill to increase equality in the national burden, The Jerusalem Post reported on its website.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak, who has been attempting to broker an agreement between Netanyahu and Mofaz to keep Kadima in the coalition, praised the development as a "display of responsibility. "

In Israel's largest city of Tel Aviv, tens of thousands of people took to the streets on Saturday evening calling on the government to enact legislation by which everyone would serve in the army or perform national service.
