600 Syrian refugees arrive in Lebanon weekly: UNHCR
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-07-15 11:09

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said that around 600 Syrian refugees arrived in Lebanon weekly, the National News Agency reported.

The UNHCR added in its weekly report that more than 30,000 Syrian refugees who fled their restive country were receiving aid in Lebanon, adding that the number of those who registered with the agency stood at 28,477.

Lebanon's Higher Relief Council (HRC) announced Tuesday that it will stop covering "any medical expenses for any wounded or other Syrian refugee in Lebanon."

"This decision will affect the UNHCR and its partner agencies," the report said, adding that "Although we will continue to offer humanitarian aid, the funds available are not enough to cover those the HRC used to cover."

Meanwhile, Lebanon's Minister of Social Affairs Wael Abu Faour said that Lebanon should not shy away from the responsibility of providing support to Syrian refugees.

"We say that Lebanon should respect its duties toward the Syrian refugees, since this is a humanitarian and ethical case before being a political one," the Lebanese minister said.
