Israeli intelligence helps Cyprus arrest terror suspect
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-07-16 08:57

Israel's intelligence agency Mossad aided Cypriot authorities in their arrest of a Hezbollah activist suspected of planning terror attacks against Israeli tourists in the country, local media reported Sunday, citing Cypriot news reports.

Cyprus police spokesman Andreas Angelides confirmed Friday that security forces detained a 24-year-old Lebanese national after raiding on his hotel room in the coastal town of Limassol on July 7. The Lebanese was in custody "on possible charges pertaining to terrorism laws."

Police officials, investigating if the suspect had any accomplices, would not disclose the suspect's name or details concerning his alleged involvement in the plot to target Israelis on the island.

The suspect reportedly told interrogators that he first contemplated attacking the Israeli embassy in Nicosia but later give up the plan due to its heavy security.

He then planned to blow up an Israeli commercial plane with a shoulder-fired missile or attack some tour buses with Israeli tourists on board, Cypriot newspaper Sigma Live reported.

According to the newspaper, security forces found in the man's possession flight schedules of Israeli airlines, photos of popular venues frequented by Israelis and information of companies leasing tour buses.

Cypriot news website Phileleftheros reported that the suspect, who holds a Swedish passport, initially denied any connection to terrorist activities, but later admitted that he headed a terror cell affiliated to Lebanon's Hezbollah.

Both media outlets said a "foreign intelligence agency" tipped off local police about the suspicious man upon his arrival in Cyprus, and according to one unconfirmed report, Israel's Mossad agents were dispatched to the island to assist the investigation.

On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu claimed at the weekly cabinet meeting that "the attempted terrorist attack was under Iranian auspices," responding to media reports from Cyprus.

Israel has pointed to Iranian involvement in many of terror attacks and claims Tehran seeks to avenge the assassination of several of its nuclear scientists over the past few years.

Mossad is said to have played a key role in thwarting numerous attempts by Hezbollah to strike Israeli and Jewish targets around the world in recent years, primarily locales favored by Israeli tourists, embassies, businessmen and officials.
