Iran reiterates mediation offer on Syria
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-07-17 18:17

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast reiterated Tuesday Iran's offer to help meditate between the Syrian government and opposition.

Speaking at a weekly press conference, Mehmanparast warned against any potential foreign intervention in Syria, emphasizing Iran will help resolve the Syrian crisis diplomatically.

He said Iran has a role to play in solving the regional crisis, adding the UN-Arab League joint special envoy Kofi Annan's visit to Iran one week ago has shown Iran's importance in helping efforts aimed at ending Syrian crisis.

Iran said repeatedly recently it is ready to help resolve the Syrian crisis through diplomatic efforts.

Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said Sunday Tehran is ready to hold talks with the Syrian opposition groups in order to promote dialogue between and the Syrian government and opposition.

He emphasized that finding a solution to the Syrian crisis is of great importance, and expressed hope that the Syrian issue will be resolved through cooperation among the regional states.

UN-Arab League joint special envoy Kofi Annan said during a visit to Tehran last week that Iran should be part of the solution to the long-standing Syrian crisis, a suggestion the United States firmly rejected.

Iran, a close ally of Syria, said it strongly opposes to any form of foreign intervention in Syria, but called on the Syrian government to listen to its people's demands and carry out reforms.

In the past months, some Western countries accused Tehran of supplying Damascus weapons used to crack down on the opposition, a charge denied by Tehran.
