Egypt's Morsi holds talks with Palestinian president
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-07-18 21:36

Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi held talks Wednesday with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who is currently on a short visit to Egypt.

The talks tackled the Egyptian-Palestinian ties, the Palestinian reconciliation and efforts exerted to get an independent Palestinian state, official news agency MENA reported.

In a press conference after the talk, Abbas said he congratulated Morsi about his winning in the presidential elections and discussed with him over some political issues that concern both sides, including the Palestinian political process since 2007.

"I affirmed to Morsi that doors for peace process with Israel are all closed, no bilateral connections between both sides right now," Abbas said.

Abbas said he believes that efforts exerted in the past over the Palestinian issue by the Egyptian government will continue in the future.

"We don't ask President Morsi to pressure on a party at the expense of the other one, as Egypt has its own vision on the Palestinian issue, which is taken as its national security issue," said Abbas.

Abbas also said he discussed with Morsi the matter of Rafah Crossing, asserting the importance of relieving the Gaza Strip in order to achieve a decent life for the Palestinian people.

Abbas arrived in Cairo Tuesday night for a two-day visit. He will also hold talks with head of the Egyptian Supreme Council of Armed Forces Hussein Tantawi.
