Leader of social protests in Israel receives death threats after string of self-immolation
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-07-27 04:07

Dahpne Leef, one of the leaders of the social protests in Israel, claimed on Thursday that he had been threatened by right-wing extremists after two men set themselves on fire to protest the country's economic policies and bring to light their own financial woes.

Moshe Silman, who set himself alight more than two weeks ago in a mass demonstration in Tel Aviv, died recently because of his wounds.

On Sunday, another Israeli man in his 40s set himself alight at an intersection in a town south of Tel Aviv, in a growing number of such suicide attempts in recent weeks.

"After Silman set himself alight, I started receiving very nasty messages... accusing me of provoking this situation," Leef told Xinhua on Thursday.

"They are doing it through some right-wing extremist Facebook pages. They are calling me an extreme left-wing, which I'm definitely not, in any case you could call me a socialist, but definitely not extreme left-wing!" she said.

"They wrote that his blood is on my hands and that I'm the one who pushed him to do it," said Leef, who was blamed for Silman's death.
