Israel bans entry for Jews into Temple Mount amid provocation fears
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-07-29 20:13

Israeli police banned Jewish worshippers from entering Jerusalem's Temple Mount Sunday Morning, during a holy day commemorating the destruction of the Jewish temple.

Police said the closure came after intelligence information showing that Jewish activists are planning to create provocations towards the Muslim community.

"We will not let anyone violate the status quo in Temple Mount, " Mickey Rosenfeld, police spokesman told Xinhua.

Muslim cleric said in response to the threats that they will not be dragged into clashes, and can hold their own riots if they choose to.

Sunday marks Tisha B'Av, a Jewish day of mourning and fasting, and is also a part of the holy Muslim month of Ramadan.

The site is holy to the Jews as the site where both ancient Jewish temples once stood.

Muslims cherish the site as the third holiest in Islam. It is revered as the Noble Sanctuary, Mohammad's place of ascent to heaven.

Some one hundred Jews gathered near Temple Mount Sunday morning, calling the decision "shameful and racist".

"It is a shame that the nation of Israel marks the destruction of the temple, yet bans entry for Jews," right-wing activists told the Israel Radio.

"I am not aware of any attempts at any provocation," Yehuda Glick, chairman of the Western Wall heritage foundation told the Ynet news website.

"As far as we're concerned this is a slap in the face. We did everything in our power to work in coordination with the police and follow the guidelines," he added.
