Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-07-31 01:22

Israeli authorities have indicted a Druze resident of the Golan Heights on charges of contacting Syrian agent and divulging information, local media reported on Monday.

According to the indictment, Iyad Jamil al-Johari, 28, who studied medicine in Syria from 2002 until 2012, was in regular contact with Syrian intelligence agents, and provided them with intelligence about the Israeli Defense Forces' deployment across northern Israel.

He allegedly collected the information during his visits home, and then passed on the information to his Syrian operators.

The information included the names and locations of army bases, types of artillery used, as well as information regarding training and movements near the border.

He also passed army gear including a radio and a document relating to an Israeli military jeep, map of the Golan Heights, an Israeli telephone SIM card, and a Hebrew text book.

Juhari was detained upon his return to Israel at the Quneitra crossing on June 28, and transferred to the Shin Bet for questioning.

According to the police, other people were also detained and questioned as part of the investigation but no further arrests were made.

The Druze originally came from Syria around the 11th century and spread across the Middle East.

There are 100,000 Israeli Druze citizens living in northern Israel, and many serve in the army, police, politics and the justice system.
