Israeli attack on Iran could cause more damage than benefits: NATO official
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-08-13 20:41

An Israeli military strike on Iran's nuclear enrichment facilities could serve to unite global jihadists and cause more damage than benefits, according to a senior North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) official, local media reported Monday.

However, Charles Bouchard, a retired general of the Royal Canadian Air Force and former commander of the mission to oust Libya's deceased leader Muammar Gadhafi, said that he doesn't believe Israel would eventually take such an "illogical and irresponsible step."

Bouchard, who worked with Israeli security forces in the past, believes Israel wouldn't initiate a move that would spark a regional conflagration and turn Muslims worldwide against Israel.

He added that the strategic price of going to war with Iran would exceed tactical gains.

"The solution is not a zero-sum game," he said, "but a compromise in which each side concedes something."

He added that, unlike the 1967 war, in which Israel swiftly conquered vast amounts of territories in six days of battle, the Jewish state wouldn't be able to carry out such a lightning strike again, nor would it get a second chance, in his words.

He also stressed that NATO and the UN Security Council would not support such an attack anytime.

Bouchard's words come amid public debate for and against a war, favored by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak if sanctions or diplomacy fail to coerce Iran to end it's nuclear program.

However, recent polls show that 46 percent of Israelis object to attacking Iran.

Opposition leader Shaul Mofaz said the prime minister is exploiting the war talk in order to deflect negative criticism.

Mofaz' main criticism involves Netanyahu's siding with ultra- Orthodox coalition partners in an attempt to draft a new army conscription bill, as well as pushing through an austerity plan which includes tax hikes and budget cuts, to the ire of many Israelis.
