Three days after the twin strong earthquakes that struck northwest Iran Saturday, Iranian hospitals are racing against time to treat those injured in the disasters.

"Between 5 to 6 hours (after the quakes), we received 358 injured people and performed 256 surgeries," Dr. Mohammad Mohamad Zadeh said in Imam Reza hospital, the biggest one in Tabriz, the capital city of East Azerbaijan province.

Many injured people were hospitalized here after the deadly earthquake happened in the city of Ahar, about 100 km away from Tabriz, where the quake was strongly felt.

Around the hospital, some injured in the quakes were walking on crutches to do the rehabilitation training.

"After the earthquake, all the professors and doctors came here. ..we sent them (the injured) immediately for the needed medical checks," Zadeh, head of Imam Reza hospital told Xinhua on Tuesday.

A 11-year-old girl, Roya, could not help crying in the ward, because the injuries she sustained during the deadly earthquake hurt badly.

"She was under the rubble of our house. After 10 minutes I took her out. She just came out of the surgery room. She's now better," Rezaei said, looking tenderly at his daughter, who suffered fractures both in her arms and legs.

"I was in the yard, when suddenly the earthquake happened. When I wanted to run away, rubble of the house fell on my head. My husband managed to take me out, but my feet and hands were injured," an Iranian lady Fatemeh said, lying on the bed inside a ward.

The treatment for those injured in the quake is free, and the hospital will do its best to cure all the injured hospitalized here, the head of the public relation department of Imam Reza hospital told Xinhua.

A 6.2-magnitude tremor, with a depth of 10 km, hit Ahar at 4: 53 p.m. local time (1223 GMT) Saturday, while another 6-magnitude earthquake, also with a depth of 10 km, struck nearby Varzaqan 11 minutes later, according to Iranian Seismological Center.

The twin quakes, which left 306 dead and over 3,000 injured, were followed by dozens of aftershocks in the following days in the region.

At 22:19 p.m. local time (GMT 1749) Wednesday, a 5-magnitude aftershock hit Varzaqan, a town 70 km away from Tabriz, according to the Iranian Seismological Center.

The quake was felt in Tabriz, where Xinhua reporter saw locals rush out of their houses in panic.
