Israeli opposition chief wants update from Netanyahu on Iran strategy, planning

Israeli Knesset (parliament) opposition chief Shaul Mofaz told local media Monday that he wants Prime Minister Netanyahu to update him regarding any "intention to lead Israel to war" againstIranvia a strike on the latter's nuclear enrichment facilities.

The Kadima party chief, who recently angrily quit the coalition, told Army radio in an interview that he had sent Netanyahu a letter on Sunday demanding a monthly update of the government's decisions, as per standing parliamentary protocol, particularly vis a vis plans for any possible military strike against Iran, and home front preparations for any possible mass-missile retaliation by Tehran or Hezbollah in Lebanon.

In the letter, with copies sent to Attorney-General Yehuda Weinstein and the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, Mofaz decried what he called "total anarchy in the public discourse on the most intimate defense topic, which has become common practice for you and your government."

Mofaz wants a clear accounting of the country's medical preparedness, infrastructure and ports readiness and protection, the amount of fuel and foreign currency set aside, and plans for evacuating densely populated areas, such as the greater Tel Aviv and Haifa bay areas.

"In your actions you are endangering Israel's sovereignty, its independence and its social and financial survival," Mofaz wrote, according to The Jerusalem Post.

"It appears that you have lost your self control, as well as control over your anonymous advisers," Mofaz told the prime minister. "There is no avoiding the recognition that the level of hysteria you are showing paints a negative picture of your true intentions."

Government coalition chairman Zeev Elkin of Netanyahu's Likud party said in response that Mofaz was turning a national security issue into a political matter.

Likud Knesset member and Netanyahu confidant Ofir Akunis slammed the letter.

"It is unfortunate that on a topic that requires national responsibility, Mofaz is behaving irresponsibly," according to Akunis, who added that, as far as political maneuvers go, "Kadima led by Mofaz is living on borrowed time."
