Iran ready to cooperate with countries to build nuclear power plants: nuclear chief
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-08-23 03:45

Fereidoon Abbasi, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), said the Islamic republic is prepared to cooperate in the construction of nuclear power plants with the countries that possess the international standards, Press TV reported on Wednesday.

"We are prepared to cooperate with the countries that possess the (International Atomic Energy) Agency's required standards for the construction of nuclear power plants," Abbasi was quoted as saying on Tuesday.

Abbasi said Iran was "currently obtaining the required experience to be able to manage the issue of building new power plants," according to Press TV.

Responding to a question on whether Japan was among the countries, Abbasi said "Should they want to cooperate with us in this regard, we possess the preparedness to cooperate with them."

The nuclear chief also said Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant would be fully inaugurated, once having undergone new tests and having its launching stages completed.

The construction of the Bushehr plant, Iran's first nuclear power plant, began in 1975 by several German companies. However, work halted when the United States imposed an embargo on hi-tech supplies to Iran after the 1979 revolution. Russia signed a contract with Iran to complete the construction in 1998.

Completion of the plant's construction has been postponed several times due to mounting technical, financial challenges and pressure from Washington.
