Gaza rockets hit southern Israel, damaging factories
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-08-26 17:02

Militants in the Gaza Strip fired rockets and mortar rounds at the southern Israeli town of Sderot Sunday morning, shattering several weeks of relative calm in the area.

A military spokeswoman said three rockets were fired at Sderot. There were no reports of casualties, although a few people were treated for shock.

Two of the projectiles struck factories in the town's industrial zone and caused damage to the structures, while a third exploded in an apple orchard, the spokeswoman told Xinhua.

Air raid sirens were sounded in the area moments before the rockets fell, alerting residents to take cover in neighborhood bomb shelters and protected areas inside homes.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, and police sappers were attempting to ascertain the type of rockets used in the attack.

Sderot, an impoverished community in southern Israel, has been targeted by hundreds of Palestinian rockets over the past decade. In June, two rockets exploded in open areas on the town's outskirts, causing no injuries or damage.
