Egyptian president to visit Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-08-26 21:24

A senior Iranian lawmaker said Sunday that Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi will visit Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant on the sideline of the Non-aligned Movement (NAM) summit, Press TV reported.

One of Iran's programs on the sidelines of the NAM summit is inviting heads of states to visit Iran's nuclear establishments, including Natanz, Isfahan and Bushehr nuclear facilities, Mansour Haqiqatpour, a member of Iran's Majlis (parliament) National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, was quoted as saying.

Construction of the Bushehr plant began in 1975 by several German companies. However, the work halted when the United States imposed an embargo on hi-tech supplies to Iran after the 1979 revolution.

Russia signed a contract with Iran to complete the construction in 1998. Completion of the plant's construction has been postponed several times due to mounting technical and financial challenges and pressure from Washington.

In the upcoming summit, Egypt will hand over the movement's rotating chairmanship to Iran.

The NAM meeting will be held in three phases: preparatory senior officials meeting on Aug. 26-27, ministerial level meeting on Aug. 28-29, and the summit on Aug. 30-31.

Participants of the summit are expected to discuss a number of political and economic issues, as well as the latest regional and international developments.
