A survey indicated on Thursday that an overwhelming majority of Israelis and Palestinians believe that an Israeli strike against Iran will prompt a major regional confrontation.
The poll was carried out by Prof. Yaacov Shamir of the Harry S. Truman Research Institute for the Advancement of Peace and the Department of Communication and Journalism at the Hebrew University, and Prof. Khalil Shikaki, Director of the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research.
It indicated that 70 percent of Israelis and 80 percent of Palestinians believe that attacking Iran would lead to a regional confrontation, while 65 percent of Israeli oppose such a strike without U.S. backing, the Ha'aretz daily reported.
Regarding the possibility of establishing an independent Palestinian state in the coming five years, 75 percent Israelis and 73 percent Palestinians believed that the possibility was very low or nonexistent.
Most of the respondents also opposed the possibility of a two- state solution where Jews and Arabs enjoy the same benefits, with 65 Israelis against such move and 68 Palestinians opposing it.
The survey used a sample of 1,270 Palestinians from the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza, and 600 Israeli citizens. |
