PNA facing critical financial crisis: Official
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-10-03 21:17

The Palestinian National Authority (PNA) is passing through an unprecedented critical financial situation, a senior Palestinian official said on Wednesday.

Ahmed Majdalani, the minister of work in the PNA cabinet in the West Bank, told Xinhua that the PNA is barely able to find enough money to pay September wages to its employees.

The official said he expects the crisis to worsen in the coming three months, adding that the PNA is very much disappointed over the results of a donors meeting held last month.

"The donors' meeting had ended without even any pledges or promises to transfer financial aid to the authority either from European or Arab countries," said Majdalani.

The United States had earlier pledged to transfer 200 million dollars to the PNA, while other Gulf states had promised to help the PNA resolve its financial troubles, but "nothing has been done, " the official said.

An official report of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said earlier that the deficit in PNA budget has exceeded 400 million dollars. The World Bank also warned two weeks ago of the growing financial crisis facing the PNA, urging donor countries to take urgent actions to help the Palestinians.

Majdalani attributed the difficult financial situation to the political and financial blockade imposed by the U.S. in response to the Palestinian bid for United Nations membership.

"There's an obvious American influence on its friends, which so far haven't fulfilled their financial pledges to the PNA to cover the deficit in the Palestinian budget.

The United States and Israel oppose the Palestinian's UN bid and called on Abbas for an unconditional resumption of peace talks with Israel, which had been stalled for two years due to disputes on Israeli settlement building.
