Israeli shelling in Gaza wounds 5 Palestinians
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-10-08 17:46

Palestinian militants fired dozens of rockets into Israel Monday morning, prompting Israeli military strikes that injured five Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

The renewal of cross-border violence comes a day after an Israeli drone hit a motorcycle traveling in southern Gaza, wounding two riders and eight passersby. Israel said the raid targeted members of the Global Jihad organization who were involved in planning and carrying out attacks against Israel.

Ashraf al-Qedra, spokesman of the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza, said that five Palestinians were wounded -- one of them seriously, after a series of Israel's retaliatory aerial and artillery shelling in central and southern the Gaza Strip.

An Israeli army spokesperson said earlier that a total of 55 rockets and mortars were fired from Gaza and landed in open areas in Western Negev, causing no damage or casualties.

The armed wing of Islamic Hamas movement, which controls the Gaza Strip, and the less-popular Islamic Jihad movement claimed responsibility for the attacks in a joint statement.

A spokesman for Ezz el-Deen al-Qassam Brigades of Hamas, Abu Obaida, said that firing the rockets on Monday "was a message to the (Israeli) occupation that the Palestinian resistance will not allow unilateral aggression."

He warned Israel of "stronger, expanded responses" if it continued raids in Gaza.

The last time Hamas took part in such cross-border violence was in June, when a series of Israeli attacks killed four Palestinians.

Hamas observes a shaky, unofficial cease-fire with Israel.
