Israeli hospital probes into patient's death over mistreatment
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-10-22 07:20

A Facebook comment criticizing Israeli Sheba Medical Center's behavior towards a patient on his last days prompted an investigation led by the same hospital into the circumstances of the death and the alleged mistreatment he received from the staff, the Haa'retz newspaper reported on Sunday. The post's author, Yoav Segev, son of the deceased Yoram Segev, accused Sheba Medical Center of negligence towards his father's condition, refusing to listen to the family's warnings regarding the man's previous health complications.

Also, young Segev accuses the hospital's staff, including nurses, of misbehaving towards his father, even humiliating him sometimes, The newspaper reported.

"When my father complained of excruciating abdominal pain to the male nurse in the department, the nurse dismissed him with the wave of a hand and ordered him to stop complaining and whining," Yoav Segev wrote on Facebook.

"In another incident he asked a female nurse how long he will have to be with an uncomfortable oxygen mask and was given the condescending reply: 'Why, are you in a hurry? Do you want to go outside for a walk?" the post continued.

The physicians who tended to Mr. Segev senior displayed equal behavior, his son wrote, ignoring the family's plea to know the man's condition and the severity of his illness.

"He did not update her (or consult with her) about the medical procedures he was considering and the possible consequences of each one of them," the post continued.

Upon writing the post, hundreds of other Facebook users joined in the conversation to complain about the same issue, a response that may lead to an organized effort to protest hospital mistreatment towards patients.

Sheba Medical Center will soon launch an investigation into Yoram Segev's death and his family's complaints about the way he was treated by staffers.
