Israeli border police plans to recruit ultra-orthodox Jews
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-10-30 19:27

Israel's paramilitary Border Police plans to recruit ultra-orthodox men into their ranks, pending a Knesset (parliament) replacement for a defunct draft law.

The Civilian Service Directorate is offering strictly observant Jewish men, also known as haredim, an alternative to full military service, which is a mandatory three years for men and two for women.

The new program aims at placing the new draftees, who require special billeting and barracks, and strictly kosher food, in West Bank areas under Israeli military control to help prevent infiltrations by illegal immigrants and terrorists, The Jerusalem Post reported Monday.

"The course focuses on integrating them into operations for defending the seam zone and preventing the entry of terrorists and hostile elements, and I have no doubt that their contribution will be a significant force-multiplier in this complex and sensitive task," said Border Police Commander Yoram Halevy.

An initial fifty recruits will be inducted as soon as the Knesset reconvenes after January elections. Lawmakers will have to craft a replacement for the decade old Tal Law, which exempted draft-aged religious seminary students from compulsory military service.

The Supreme Court struck down the Tal Law in February, ruling that it discriminated against secular and traditionally religious Israelis who shoulder the burden of years in uniform. The court ordered its expiration by August 1.

The Directorate is currently working on expanding the number of courses for the haredi population, as well as prepping military bases to meet their special religious needs.
