Climate change summit day 2 focuses on Kyoto Protocol
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-11-28 07:50

Climate talks have intensified in Qatar, where representatives from over 200 countries have gathered for a two week conference.

The Kyoto Protocol was the focus on day two. The legally-binding emissions cap agreement expires this year. It remains the most significant international achievement in the fight against global warming.

Countries are hoping to negotiate an extension to the pact that would run until at least 2020. The Vice-Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change believes that a commitment to renewable energy is also critical.

He added that one way of addressing climate change is by putting a price on carbon emissions. Currently, emitters, such as utilities or factories, are not paying specific fees for sending pollution into the atmosphere.
